2007 National HotRod Reunion National Trails Raceway
As I step out of my time machine this Monday morning, I reflect on the events of the past weekend at the Hot Rod Reunion at National Trail Raceway. I had been transported back in time to when I was first bitten by the Drag Racing Bug, on that very drag strip back in ’64.
There were Gasser’s of every kind from ’33 to ’41 Willys, ’55 to ’57 Chevys, Anglias, and Austins. Names like Fred Bear, Chuck Finders, “Stone, Woods & Cook”, and Porky Zartman of Gasser fame. Front engine dragsters from Top Fuel, Jr. Fuel, and Comp, Don Greene’s “Rat Trap”, AA/FA and Funny Cars. Seeing these old cars on the strip again made these old bones feel young again. It was from a time long past….or was it?
Standing before me, cracking jokes and signing autographs, were legendary Don Garlitts, TV Tommy Ivo, Larry Dixon Sr., and Paul LeMat (John Milner) of “American Graffiti” and “More American Graffiti” fame.
The whole place was one big tire smoking car show, race and a swap meet. You could buy an old race car to restore or sort through the mountains of parts for everything from vintage mags to 6-71 GMC blowers.
So I’ll see ya’ next year on Father’s Day Weekend for the next Hot Rod Reunion at National Trails Raceway.
